Chance? Humbug!

Quotation

We need to study the Word found in the Bible for ourselves, allowing the Holy Spirit to teach us God's word and help us understand what is scriptural.

Barry Denzil Haney

Verse

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Romans 1:19-20

Reflection

The evolutionist-creationist controversy has been hotly debated since the publication of Charles Darwin’s book, The Origin of Species, 24 November 1859.

An evolutionist is defined in two ways: a person who believes in or supports a theory of evolution, especially in biology; a person who supports a policy of gradual growth or development rather than sudden change or expansion.

On the other hand, a creationist is defined as a person who believes all things

were created, substantially as they now exist, by an omnipotent Creator and not

gradually evolved or developed.

Many of today’s scientists who believe in evolution are atheists or agnostics. They believe evolution is incompatible with the Bible.

One of the main controversies debated between evolutionists and creationists centers around whether chance serves as the basic foundation for evolution.

In his book, C. S. Lewis: Anti-Darwinist – A Careful Examination of His Views on Darwinism, Jerry Bergman discusses C.S. Lewis’ opposition to chance:

Lewis also opposed the ultimate basic foundation of Darwinism, chance, writing that if:

“the solar system was brought about by an accidental collision,  then the appearance of organic life on this planet was also an  accident, and the whole evolution of Man was an accident  too. If so, then all our present thoughts are mere accidents—  the accidental by-product of the movement of atoms. And this  holds for the thoughts of the materialists and astronomers as  well as for anyone else’s.”1

What does God think about evolution?

Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955) was a French Jesuit, thought by many to have thought more deeply about God and evolution than anyone else. In his book, Responses to 101 Questions on God and Evolution, John Haught provides this sketchy summary of Teilhard’s ideas on God and evolution:

·      The whole universe is in evolution.

·      There is a clear direction to the cosmic evolutionary story. In spite of the obvious, meandering “branching bush” character of life’s evolution, the universe as a whole has clearly moved in the direction of increasing organized complexity. The process has passed through preatomic, atomic, molecular, unicellular, multicellular, vertebrate, primate phases and is now at work gathering the human mass toward a new future…The modern world’s emerging technologies, communication networks, educational and economic systems, and so forth, are bringing about a new kind of organized complexity.

·      During the course of evolution, consciousness has grown in direct proportion to the increase in organized physical complexity… planet and the universe as a whole are advancing toward integration at a new and higher level.

·      God-Omega is the ultimate end and explanation of evolution. Evolution happens because as God draws near to the world, the world is drawn into God…we may understand the whole epic of evolution as a cosmic search for God.2

In Romans 1:25, Paul tells us this about modern day evolutionists:

Who changed the truth of God into a lie and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

In Colossians 1:16-17, Paul goes on to tell us God created all things:

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

If you are still in doubt, the first line in God’s inerrant instruction book to us says this:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

I rest my case. Chance? Humbug!

From reliable testimony, it may be assumed that Charles Darwin returned to the faith of his early manhood.

Lady Hope visited him one afternoon in England. He was almost bedridden for some months before he died. And sitting up in bed, he held an open Bible. “What are you reading?” asked Lady Hope. “The Royal Book, I call it. Isn’t it grand?” Darwin answered.

Lady Hope mentioned about creation and the early chapters of Genesis. Darwin seemed greatly distressed and a look of agony came over his face as he said: “I was a young man with unformed ideas. I threw out queries, suggestions, wondering all the time over everything, and to my astonishment the ideas took like wildfire. People made a religion out of them.”

Then he added: “I have a summerhouse in the garden. I want you to speak to the people there tomorrow afternoon.” “What shall I speak about?” Lady Hope asked. “Christ Jesus,” he replied in a clear emphatic voice, adding in a lower tone, “and His salvation. Is not that the best theme? And then I want you to sing some hymns with them.” Then he added in farewell: “If you take the meeting at three o’clock, this window will be open and you will know that I am joining in with the singing.”
